How much is it costing you?
Have you ever said to yourself, "I'd like to (lose 10 pounds, get more sleep, make money from my hobbies, fill in the blank for you), but..."? If you're like me, your mind can come up with a lot of reasons why you need to wait or a list of hypothetical scenarios that leave you feeling overwhelmed instead of inspired. To quote Marie Forleo, "A confused mind always says no." That's what I want to talk about today to get that "but" out of your way and get your butt on your way to where you'd like to be.
We all have experiences that play as tapes in our minds that are there to keep us repeating behaviors that help us and not repeating behaviors that put us in danger. Historically, they keep us safe and connected to the people that ensure our survival. They are very normal and have protected us well. But when it comes to reaching your goal, whether that is weight loss or that next step in your career, you may need to get creative as to what you are willing - or no longer willing- to do to get there. Take steps to rewrite those tapes to move beyond them. Here's how:
This was a powerful exercise for me when I was starting my business. I wrote down all the things I would do to support my blossoming aspirations. I was willing to work several part time jobs, take on a roommate, ask for help. I was willing to barter services, live paycheck to paycheck, take a chance, rent a space, and network to put myself out there. I was no longer willing to give away my time to tasks I didn't enjoy or people that weren't actively striving to thrive. I was not willing to take on a full time job or one that wouldn't allow my business the time I felt like it deserved (and I passed on or was passed over for many income sources). I wasn't willing to let myself stay mopey for too long and I tried to surround myself with insightful, motivating thoughts.
I'd revisit my list repeatedly, whenever I needed to make a "next step" decision. The more time that passed, the easier it became to see the divide that had formed.
You may not be trying to start a business, but any time you're dreaming and bringing that dream to life, the challenges seem to be universal. Self-doubt, dedication, focus, etc. The reality is, we are more than capable of creating great things for ourselves. The more you can streamline your vision, the clearer your target becomes and a clear target gets your full attention. I've used this exercise with myself and my clients to help narrow down a mission statement of sorts for many different goals- weight loss, finances, happiness, relationships, etc.
It can feel overwhelming to start. My dear friend, Erin Eyink, is a gifted motivational speaker and used to challenge me "what it costing you if you don't?" To summarize Les Brown if it's a desire of yours, it's your responsibility to bring it to life because someone else needs what you are offering.
Get that notepad out and jot down your list of willingness, add to it as it comes to you and before you know it you'll be ready to take some serious steps toward bringing your goal to life.
