If You Wait Until You're "There", You'll Never Get There
There is a natural tendency to tack a lot of emotion on the outcome of a situation. Maybe you've heard yourself saying, "I'll feel so much happier when…." or "It'll be so much easier when…" It's as if we are putting our life on hold until we get "there". As I was journaling for myself, I realized how often I put my life on hold until I reach a certain point in my journey. What I'm communicating is that I will only be worthy of feeling happy, free, relief, joy, (fill in the blank for you) when I accomplish my goal- that somehow my current version is not deserving of all of those great things in this moment. When it comes to creating the life you want, your thoughts create your experience. The way you perceive your situation influences your actions and your actions say a lot about what you believe about yourself. That's why I've found it so powerful to check what's going on in my head- just below the surface. We repeat thoughts so often we stop being aware of them, this is a biological function to make your life easier, but it can, in reality, make your life more challenging than you'd prefer. What we think, manifests. This may sound a little strange (or woo woo) but I've found it to be true over and over again for myself and for clients as well.
If you wait until you're "there", you'll never get there. This was a huge roadblock for me and was holding me back. For a long time, I put my dreams on pause to fix parts of me that I felt like needed to change in order for me to succeed. Inside, I saw myself living a life that is happy, healthy, wealthy and full of love and yet, my day to day was fueled with the belief that those things would only happen when I got the better paying job, or dressed a certain way or had x amount in my bank account. It wasn’t until I said "no" to that voice that I was able to notice those things in my day to day.
A powerful exercise I've done with myself and clients is to journal in fast forward. What I mean by that is to think about you reaching that place (10 pounds-, $20,000-, a loving partner-, new car- from now). How do you feel? What's changed for you? Do you feel more vibrant, sexier, more confident, secure, etc.? Typically, this indicates where there are some blocks that need to be cleared. The reality is, these things are available to you right now. They may not be showing up the way that you expect and what you may not realize is that you are the only one that is keeping them at bay. In the universal law of attraction, like attracts like. Which basically means, the energy/beliefs we are emitting are preceding the results we are experiencing. These blocks are communicating that, on some level, you have an opportunity to believe you are worthy or allowed to have your wildest dreams come true. The belief that's limiting you may have been the result of something a teacher, parent, partner or coworker said in the past that you decided to believe as true. The best part is you don’t have to know exactly where it came from to fix it. When we choose to stop believing what someone else says is true about or for us, we learn to trust our inner self and voice again. The more we learn to "trust our gut"- call it what you want Holy Spirit, divine guidance, intuition- the more we are capable of creating for ourselves.
I think of it like a track runner. Imagine if they were trying to run, dragging a ball and chain on each of their limbs- they probably couldn't go very fast. Once they start to take those things off, they start to move faster in the direction their going. And their muscles are stronger from having worked against the resistance for so long (really lovely thought when you struggle to see how our past has set us up to be where we are now). The same is true for you. The more you can let go of the things that have been diluting your energy, the more energy you have to move in the direction you truly WANT to go. Focused energy is where results are born.
So if you're feeling stuck on repeat or finding your life lacking luster, maybe it's time to challenge or let go of the beliefs you have previously held- to repair your thoughts- and see just how much better you feel! If you're having some trouble identifying your thoughts, try writing them out. I've found there are a few that keep repeating- I'd recommend focusing on one at a time to prevent feeling overwhelmed (been there, done that). The more you become aware of them, the more power you have to rewrite them. I'd love to hear what comes up for you!
